Psychoanalysis

Helen Sheehan : Aliens, This Way Please

It is fitting that this group New Studies on Hysteria which is hosting this Conference today has had no permanent place of domicile since its inception.
For quite some time, the Milltown Institute offered us a place of refuge but due to its imminent closure we are once again searching for a place in which to work.
Some of you will recognise something of the same kind of situation in which Lacan found himself in Nov. 1963 when he was finally excommunicated (a word he himself uses) from the International Psychoanalytic Association. To be more precise, Lacan’s teaching had been the object of censure and a ban on this teaching ensured that he would never again be sanctioned by the I.P.A. Lacan regarded this as tantamount to excommunication. This is of course a religious...

Helen Sheehan : Searching for the Lost Cause : Freud’s First Steps (towards a theory of Anxiety)1

It is important to remember that we cannot separate theory from practice for Freud and to remember that every discovery Freud has made has in one way or another been influenced not only by his theoretical work but by what was happening in his personal life and this is because, it seems to me, for Freud theory is not something you do – you write about. What you write about are the little threads of significance that go to frame a Life and then we call this theory. In other words, as Lacan insists the unconscious is that which does not stop not writing itself.

Marie-Astrid Dupret : ¿Los llaman terroristas?

Malachi McCoy : Pre-phobic Anxiety *

“My dear Professor, I am sending you a little more about Hans-but this time, I am sorry to say, material for a case history. ”The boy woke up one morning in tears; asked why he was crying, he said to his mother: “When I was asleep I thought you were gone and I had no Mummy to coax with” [The child’s word for caress. It is therefore,] “An anxiety dream.”
In 1909 the publication of the case-history “caused a great stir and even greater indignation”. Would the findings of a psychoanalysis of a suffering child meet with the same agitations and scorn as Freud’s case history of the analysis and recovery of Little Hans? Or, can we learn from it and find hope? It’s my hope that this paper, rather than giving a chronological account, can remind us of the mental activities driving the...

Stephanie Metcalfe : Freud's challenge - Why the Past Matters[1]

The case of Eliabeth Von R – Freud’s first full analysis – is important to look at in detail as it shows how the psychoanalytic technique was developed by Freud. He himself underlines its significance: “I derived from this analysis a literally unqualified reliance on my technique.”2 Throughout his work with the patient his contention that her symptoms are intimately linked to her personal history and experiences is affirmed. Taking this approach to the treatment leads him to uncover the root of Elisabeth Von R’s hysterical symptoms. He is steadfast in his belief that the symptoms origin can be uncovered through free association in sessions and through the appropriate interventions of the analyst that will continue to allow the patient uncover repressed material. In examining this case...
