Psychoanalysis

Nellie Curtin : The narcissistic ego : functions and fallacies[1]

Freud's paper "On Narcissism" (1914) is considered to be one of his most important writings. He had developed his ideas over a decade prior to this publication and he continued to refine them during the subsequent decade. His paper is interesting because it includes the hesitations and ambiguities of a theory in its beginnings. This is also true of what he says about the ego which is so closely linked with Narcissism.

The paper on Narcissism highlights the ego and its functions which play such a central role in the psyche. In analytic work, the ego therapies are considered "inauspicious". If we do not wish to pursue the "orthopaedics of the ego" as Lacan calls it, how do we deal with the ego in psychoanalysis? Ego's place as outlined by Freud appears in neurosis, in repression,...

Albert Llussà i Torra : A reading of the neuro-psychoses of defence

In The Neuro-Psychoses of Defence Freud articulates the origin of phobias and obsessions, formulates a change to the theory of hysteria, and identifies an important characteristic that is common to both these neuroses as well as to the psychoses which he classifies as hallucinatory confusion. This common characteristic of all conditions is that they are brought about by an act of the ego in its attempt to defend itself from an incompatible idea.

Terry Ball : Psychoanalysis: a mapping out, turning the symbolic inside out[1]

This paper considers the notion of psychoanalysis as a ‘mapping out’ which was put forward by Lacan in his 24th Seminar, L’insu que sait de l’une bévue s’aile à mourre. The implied synonyms for ‘mapping out’, such as, ‘identifying with one’s symptom’ and ‘turning inside out’, are highlighted so as to gain some insight into this notion. How one is to understand and situate the symbolic intervention of the analyst and interpretation as a cut are also explored, as are the notions of the symptom – a symbolic representation with an effect in the Real and the possibility of dissolving this effect. Lacan’s toric depictions of these ideas are also presented.

Monica Errity : Revi(siting) repetition*

In The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis Lacan makes the following statement about repetition; ‘What is repeated is always something that occurs… as if by chance’.1 He then goes on to define chance as, ‘the real as encounter - the encounter in so far as it may be missed, in so far as it is essentially the missed encounter’.2 Taken in isolation these words appear enigmatic and bewildering leaving us wondering how they are to be understood. Fortunately, Lacan doesn’t leave us completely in the dark. His frequent references to Freud suggest that before we can begin to understand what he, Lacan, is saying about repetition, we need to revisit Freud and revise, go over again (wiederholen) what he has said on the subject.
The issue of repetition had been on Freud’s mind from...

Charles Melman : Phobia

We are going to take up again, in a very precise way, the elements which for Lacan are the organisers of a phobia. We are going to do this by a demonstration, a series of assertions which are really unique to Lacan and which will among other things put into practice this chart which we have already seen, a chart which is comprised of the permutations of the real, the symbolic and the imaginary,

Stephanie Metcalfe : Inside bungalow 3: a psychoanalytic perspective[1]

This paper aims to look at the pressing question of how we care for vulnerable members of our society. The shock and outrage that followed the airing of a Prime Time investigation programme, portraying residents with severe disabilities being routinely abused, has prompted questions in relation to what light psychoanalysis can shine on scandals such as the one exposed in Aras Attracta. When confronted with extreme vulnerability we are reminded of our own helplessness, what Freud termed Hilflosigkeit and are therefore faced with something of the Real. It seems essential to explore, from a psychoanalytic perspective, the effect of this kind of work on the subjectivity of carers and clinicians. The unconscious must be acknowledged in this area of work, in order to inform the therapeutic...

Johanna Vennemann : Il cerchio magico

Johanna Vennemann : Der magische Kreis.
